White-hot lava flows down the streets of Mega-City One, and Father Earth’s mutant army breaks in. A suicide squad stops the Power Tower, but the Judges must now deal with the mutielanders.
Ol’ Stoney Face
Dredd’s now pretty peeved at this assault on his City, and is ready for a reckoning with Father Earth.
The Big Meg (and Beyond)
Not a good day to be strolling the streets on Mega-City One. The streets heave and crack as the power drawn up by the Power Tower becomes un-contained, lava pouring down the streets and earthquakes forming. Entire Cityblocks are destroyed, and the protective wall is breached.
We say hello – and then very swiftly say goodbye – to the Holocaust Squad. They are parachuted into the raging inferno where the Power Tower used to be and manage to switch off the main valve, at the cost of their own lives.
We don’t get a lot of specific information about this Squad, but we can infer they’re Judges tasked with particularly hazardous missions. The group here accept this gig knowing full well it’s a suicide mission.
Father Earth’s mutant army uses the break in the wall to gain access to the City.
No hard numbers, but we can assume a good many citizens die here. There’s a particularly harsh moment when Dredd goes to rescue a woman hanging from a crack in the street – then the earth shifts again and she’s crushed.
Dredd takes out a handful of the mutielanders who are causing carnage.
Another good one, with the lava and earthquake threat to the Big Meg effectively visualised. I like the use of structure here, with this threat dealt with in this episode and a final one to take on the army of Father Earth.
