Dan Dare Annual 1979: Last Refuge of the Banana! (Ryan’s Revenge)

Case File

Dredd is assigned to protect Mega-City One Mayor Amalfi from escaped con Ryan. When Ryan attempts to kill the Mayor, Dredd realises that Amalfi has his own crimes to face.

Ol’ Stoney Face

Hates Amalfi, and calls him a slug on more than one occasion. He’s apparently also taken up beating criminals to death, to the point where he gets a stern talking-to from the Chief Judge.

The Big Meg (and Beyond)

MC-1 has underwater fish farms where some convicts are put to use – they are apparently genetically modified to work underwater, although we don’t see much sign of this on Ryan.

Most citizens live on “soybeef and synthicaf”, while elites like Mayor Amalfi get access to fresh fruit.

The Law

A penal raft is submerged underwater as a base for the convict deep-sea farmers.

Creeps

Before being arrested, Ryan was a body-legger – stealing body parts from morgues for others. During his trial, he implicated Mayor Amalfi but was not believed.

After escaping from his underwater prison, Ryan heads straight to Amalfi’s ridiculously tall apartment building to get his revenge. We learn that Amalfi did indeed hire Ryan to procure him corpses – he used the bones as fertiliser for his decadent plants.

Resyk

Dredd takes out Ryan first with shots from his Lawgiver, and the con falls out of the apartment.

Amalfi then tries to silence Dredd, but slips on a banana skin and falls out of the building as well.

Verdict

I have no idea what to say about this one. To steal from one of the greats, I feel like my brain has been smashed by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick. It’s not even worth pretending this fits into the ongoing Dredd story, and minus some of the insane dialogue, Dredd’s hilariously bad characterisation and the riot of colour it’s just your standard “out for revenge” plot.
